It's close to crunch time and Antoine Walker's lurking beyond the arc
Under the spotlight You see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream But Walker takes the shot before you make it
You start to freeze As the airball hits you right between the eyes
You're paralyzed
'Cause this is Antoine Antoine's night
And no one's gonna stop him From the brick about to strike
You know it's Antoine Antoine's night
He's looking for his shot Outside for 3 points Antoine, yeah

Who is Monta Ellis?

If you are not an avid basketball fan or from the Bay Area, you probably don't know who Monta Ellis is. Why should you? He doesn't have a multi million dollar shoe deal with Nike. He doesn't go into the stands and throw Mike Tyson hay makers at fans. What he is doing is lighting the NBA up on a nightly basis and his name deserves to be heard.
The name is pronounced Mon-Tay. I first learned about Monta Ellis about three years ago at Oracle Arena on Martin Luther King Day. The Warriors were blowing out the Seattle Supersonics and a skinny 6'3" guard checked into the game. He immediately caught my eye with his great speed and athleticism. I left the Arena that day thinking that Monta could be a player and i kept hearing it from my dad, "That Mon-ta Ellis sure was impressive today." "What do you think of Mon-Ta Matt?" My dad didn't know his name then, but he knows it now.
So who exactly is Monta Ellis? Monta was a McDonald's All-American out of Lanier high in Jackson, Missippi. When Monta decided to enter the NBA Draft that year he was an after thought. With guys like Andrew Bynum, Martell Webster, and Gerald Green entering know one cared about the skinny kid from Jackson. Monta had a bad McDonald's game so he won't be that good. The Warriors didn't listen to that talk taking Monta with the 10th pick in the 2nd round (40th overall). The Warriors drafted another undersized two guard named Gilbert Arenas in 2001 and we know how that turned out. Everyone knows lightning doesn't strike in the same place twice, it does in the Golden State.
Monta got used to the bench in Mike Montgomery's system his rookie year. When he did get more run later in the season when the Warriors were eliminated from playoff contention Monta showed flashes of brilliance. Monta averaged nearly 7 points per game in only 18 minutes on the floor. He also showed elite quickness that turned into many fast break points for the Warriors. After the season a great thing happened for Monta. The Warriors brought in Mr. Fast break, Don Nelson to run the show. That opened up new doors not only for the Warriors future, but Monta was picture perfect for Nelson's run-and-gun system.

Early word out of Don Nelson's first training camp with the Warriors was that "Nellie" didn't like the way Monta played and he was looking for someone to take his spot in the rotation. The Warriors brought in Dajaun Wagner and many thought Monta was going to resume his position on the bench. That was not the case. Dajaun was cut before the season started and Monta got minutes immediately. Monta made it tough for Nellie not to put him on the floor. When you shoot 47 percent from the field and take the ball away 1.7 times a game you deserve to be in the rotation. By mid-season Monta cracked the starting five and was taking time away from the Warriors franchise player Jason Richardson. Monta finished the season averaging 16.5 points per game and was voted NBA Most Improved Player. The best thing yet was that Monta was part of the Warriors making the playoffs for the first time in 14 seasons ending the longest drought in the league.

The scene was set for Monta to have his coming out party against the 67 win Dallas Mavericks. Don Nelson would have something else to say about that. Monta immediately found himself in Nelson's dog house against the Mav's. Monta struggled to guard the more physical and experienced Jason Terry and Jerry Stackhouse. Nelson knew that and rotated Matt Barnes and Jason Richardson in the lineup more often. The Warriors ended up stunning the world by taking down the Mav's in 6 games becoming only the second 8 seed to beat a 1 in the last ten years. Still Monta's confidence was shook. The Warriors went out in 5 games against the Utah Jazz and set up a big off season for the Warriors.

Don Nelson is an excellent motivator. Many may not see it but he is only behind Phil Jackson in getting the most out of his players. That's why he said he didn't like Monta before the 2007 season. That is why he sat Monta a lot in the playoffs. He knew that would only motivate the young star. During the 2007 NBA Draft Monta received some more motivation when the Warriors traded away starting shooting guard Jason Richardson opening the door for Monta to fill the void. That move also opened up cap room for the club to resign Monta after the season when he would become a restricted free agent. They would not let another Gilbert Arenas walk out on them.

The Warriors have another Gilbert Arenas. Monta came out gang busting this season. He is averaging 19.3 points per game on 53 percent from the field. 53 percent from the field for a guy that is only 6'3", 177 pounds. Quite impressive. What is more impressive is what Monta did in the Month of February. Monta shot a ridiculous 60% from the field. Not for a three game stretch, the whole month. He became only the ninth guard in league history to ever accomplish that feat. Monta is a little guy, a 7 footer accomplishing that is impressive enough but for little Monta, that is insane. During that stretch he put up 26.3 points per game alluding to what Monta will be able to do in the future. The crazy thing to think is that there is going to be more from this guy. Did i mention he is one of the better rebounding guards in the league pulling down 4.6 per game. This is only his third season and at 22 years old the milky way is the limit for this extraordinary talent.

So with shoe company And 1 now coming out with their "Who is Monta Ellis" campaigns around the globe Monta should be a household name soon. To answer your question dad, "I love Mon-Ta Ellis, he is going to be a great player in this league for years to come." I know who Monta Ellis is. Do You?

3 Bagger to be Remembered

Timothy Charles Wallach -
The Cal State Fullerton Grad went first round to the Expos in the 1979 Draft(10th overall). After leading the Titans to their first NCAA championship Wallach found quick success in the MLB. Making in to the big leagues in 1980(only a year from being drafted) his career in Montreal flourished. Over a 17 year career Wallach was a 5 time allstar and 3 time Gold Glover at the hot corner. In 1987 Wallach came in 4th in the NL MVP voting, Wallach 87 season was his best. He hit .298 with 123 RBI and 26 HR's and 1 scoreless inning pitched! Wallach was the L.A. Dodgers hitting coach until 2005 and was replaced by Eddie Murray. The 1979 Golden Spikes award winner is currently unemployed in the baseball world.

Top 5 Shooting Guards of All-Time

1. Michael Jeffrey Jordan When the greatest players in NBA history are brought up the name Michael Jordan is sure to follow. He transcended the game. He made Lebron James 90 million dollars out of high school. Young kids in urban cities took the chance of losing their lives to wear his shoes. Gatorade and Hanes are gargantuan companies because he endorsed them. He was the 90's version of the Beatles and the new millennium version of Tiger Woods. Did i mention he could do some pretty incredible things on the court too.
So how could i have a top shooting guard list without his "Airness". "Air Jordan" burst into the league in 1984 and averaged an incredible 28.2 points per game. Rookies don't average 28 ppg. Kevin Durant is one of the higher scoring rookies of the last couple years and he is only putting up 19.4 a game. Keep this in mind, Durant is getting his 19 on about 17 shots per game while shooting 40% from the field which is expected from a rookie. Jordan shot a remarkable 51% from the field while shooting about 20 shots per game. That is what i call efficient. In his third season he decided to average 37.1 ppg which was the fifth highest total in league history only behind Wilt. Michael not only could score the rock, he could stop it. Michel would hound players into turnovers with his long arms and that is where he got to make the highlight reel dunks. Jordan is second all-time in steals and third all-time in points. If he didn't retire twice he would have both records.
Jordan was a winner and winning is what gets you into greatest of all-time conversations. Everyone thinks Dan Marino was a great quarterback but when the greatest comes up he is overshadowed by Joe Montana and Tom Brady because of their rings even though Marino has stats that blow them off the radar. Jordan won 6 championships and i go back to his retirement because he should have at least 8. Michael Jordan was the ultimate competitor. He fought teammates he wanted to win so bad. He was a degenerate gambler because of his addictive behavior. All of that combined makes him the greatest shooting guard in league history, for now.

2. Kobe Bean Bryant Kobe Bryant has done things Michael Jordan will never do. He was the first guard drafted out of high school. He was the youngest player to score 10,000 and 20,000 points in his career. I almost forgot, Kobe scored 81 points in a game. Only Wilt has had a higher total in a game. Kobe Bryant is no Michael Jordan. Kobe Bryant is the new Kobe Bryant.
Kobe is the best player we have seen since Michael. He has all the moves and some. He can bury the three and is money from the line. He can cram it down your throat or fade you up like kid n play. The kid can lock down a teams best scorer like he is in Alcatraz. There is nothing on the basketball court that Kobe Bryant can not do. So why isn't he the best? My answer is because Michael came first and the only way Kobe can change that is if he wins 7 titles overall to go with the three he already has. He would have to win at least 3 MVP's and that still would not be enough. Kobe Bryant is the most polished player we are ever going to witness (Lebron is the most talented) and we are going to waste it away saying how he is no Michael.

3. Jerry West aka "The Logo" They call him the logo folks and for good reason. His body makes up the NBA logo. He did more than just pose for pictures. West averaged 27 points per game throughout his career and made 9 championship series winning 1. West was a great passer dishing out 6 assist per game. West also played a little sticky on the defensive of side also helping himself to almost 3 steals per game.
The thing i most remember Mr. West for is building the three peat Laker team of Shaq and Kobe. For that i love Jerry West. I wish i could of seen him play. If West had won more rings he could of been a little higher on this list.

4. Allen Iverson Allen Iverson has been nothing but heart since coming to the league from Georgetown. He is listed at 6' 180 pounds and that is pushing it. AI is more like 5'11", 165 pounds. What he lacks in size he makes up with his huge heart. Iverson won Rookie of the Year in 97 and has won 4 scoring titles since. Iverson also plays the passing lanes better than most in history stealing 2.3 per game. Although Iverson doesn't enjoy "Practice" too much he brings it every night and continues to be a league leader in minutes per game. He single handedly drove the Sixers to the finals in 01 and now is searching for his ring with the Nuggets. Good luck AI.

5. "Pistol" Pete Maravich The story of Pete Maravich is what legends are mad of. Pete Maravich is a legend. I am not going to tell you the stories of how Pete became the man he did but it is up to you to do the research. It is well worth it. Pete did things with the ball that we would not see for another 15 years. He blew peoples minds. He played absolutely no defense but no one cares because his offense was so potent. He averaged 24.2 points per game and it would of been a lot more if he didnt finish his career with a string of injuries. If you have never heard of Maravich then there is something wrong with you but please do some research and learn about one of the greatest players in league history.

UGLY DUDE OF THE WEEK-Mike Ricci

Mike Ricci was selected 4th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. Ricci would win a Stanley Cup in 1996 with the Colorado Avalanche. In 1997 he joined the San Jose Sharks where he would quickly become a fan favorite.

In 2005, Ricci switched his uniform number to 40 in honor of former NFL player Pat Tillman, who was killed in action while serving for the U.S. Army. The two had met in San Jose. Ricci played the 2005-06 season with the Phoenix Coyotes.

In 2007 he retired after having neck surgery. He is now a adviser for the Sharks.

Throwback MLB Player- Howard "HoJo" Johnson

Howard "HoJo" Johnson is a classic throwback player from the mid 1980's to the early 1990's. He was a switch hitting third baseman and played for the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs from 1982 to 1995. He is third on the Mets' all-time lists for home runs and runs batted in and second on their doubles and stolen bases lists. He led the National League in home runs in 1991 with 38. He then followed that great year by falling off harder then Brady Anderson on the Baltimore Orioles with only seven home runs.

HoJo is currently the New York Mets hitting coach after being their first base coach for last season's choke job Mets.

Degenerate information about HoJo:
-In 2001, Johnson was on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot but received no votes in his only try.

-In the 2007 draft, Johnson's son Glen was selected by the Mets in the 36th round but did not sign with them.

-Was drafted as a 17 year old by the Yankees in the 23rd round but didnt sign

-Signed as a 18 year after being drafted 12th overrall by the Tigers

-Has two World Series Rings: 1984 Detriot Tigers and 1986 New York Mets
